Madam Zhang Sujiu is a famous patriotic overseas Chinese leader in South California, USA. As the president of Chinese Associations Federation of South California, overseas consultant of All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and syndic of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, she attended, organized and led many important social activities of the overseas Chinese circle in South California. Madam Zhang Sujiu is an influential community leader in the circle of overseas Chinese in USA, and also a successful educator and entrepreneur.
Zhang Sujiu was graduated from the department of Civil Engineering in Tsinghua University with outstanding achievements and she had taught in Tianjin University since 1957 for more than twenty years. In 1981 Zhang Sujiu resided in USA. At first she was engaged in academic research in the University of Kentucky and later being an engineer in a high-tech company in Silicon Valley, California. In 1999 Zhang Sujiu was invited by the president of Tsinghua University Wang Dazhong to be the president of North America Education Foundation of Tsinghua University. Under the instruction of the famous scientist and winner of Nobel Prize Yang Zhenning, Ding Zhaozhong and the incumbent president of Tsinghua University Gu Binglin, she raised much money for Tsinghua University in USA. Zhang Sujiu also established “North America Tsinghua” magazine and website for the alumnus in North America and friends concerning the development of Tsinghua, which provideed a channel to thoroughly know about their Alma Mater Tsinghua University’s development.
After China won the host of the 2008 Olympic Games, Zhang Sujiu actively took part in overseas Chinese establishing Beijing symbolic Olympic gyms. She organized Chinese-Americans in south California participatng in the activity of donating to establish “National Aquatics Center” for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In the Beijing Olympic three-year anniversary victory meeting held by Beijing Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, among the 1400 donators, there were more than 600 from South California. Zhang Sujiu was highly praised by the meeting.
At the beginning of 2004 when Chen Shuibian put forward the 320 public vote brazenly. Zhang Sujiu started and established a “For One China” website-www.ForOneChina.com, appealling all Chinese-Americans sign names to actively against American Congressmen supporting Chen Shuibian 320 public vote. During the short eight days, there were twenty thousand Chinese signing names to support, which expressed overseas Chinese strong feeling of opposing Taiwan's Pro-independence and supporting the wish of “For One China”.
Another thing she did was promoted the 2008 New Year Chinese mainland flower car performing in Pasadena Rose Parade USA for the first time in the history.
Every year on the morning of Jan. 1st, Pasadena holds the Rose Parade. It will be broadcast live to more than 400,000,000 audiences and is the most influential flower car parade. During the one hundred history of the Rose Parade, there was no Chinese mainland flower car attending the parade. Through Zhang Sujiu’s promotion, on Jan 1st, 2008 there was eventually a Beijing 2008 Olympic Game flower car attending the 119th Pasadena Rose Parade USA, and it won the award of the best theme. Later she held a series of activities including “New Beijing, New Olympics” photo exhibition and “welcome the Olympics worldwide” performing to publicize Beijing Olympics.
On May 12, a massive earthquake occurred at Wenchuan city in Sichuan province. Zhang Sujiu soon organized large-scale disaster relief party on May 15. She herself took the lead in donation and encouraged other association and individual to continue donating.
Through a series of activities such as promoting flower car parade, Madam Zhang made multi contact with American mainstream media. Till now, the mainstream society of USA has already thought that the Chinese Associations Federation of SouthCalifornia leaded by Zhang Sujiu is the spokesman to express overseas Chinese aspirations.
Zhang Sujiu has two important social work in 2009. One is to be responsible for Flag Raising Ceremony and photo exhibition in the celebration of 60th anniversary of the founding of PRC. The other is to organize the rose flower car for exhibiting Shanghai World Expo on Jan. 1st 2010, which would be the second Chinese flower car after the 2008 Olympics flower car.
Madam Zhang Sujiu is the youngest daughter of the famous patriotic military officer, General Zhang Zhizhong. Inheriting her father’s will, Madam Zhang makes friends with people from Taiwan thoroughly, sparing no effort for the peace and unity of homeland.
